Teaching Philosophy

As a teacher, I view instrumental learning as a pathway to self-mastery, requiring patience, discipline, and commitment.

It is my responsibility to establish high standards and expectations for each student and create an environment so that the student will put forth their best effort, challenge themselves, and take pride in their achievement.

My approach to teaching begins with fundamentals such as bow grip, posture, playing position, and shifting, with emphasis on good intonation and sound production. In every lesson, these concepts are reinforced to provide a strong technical foundation, enabling the student to play with freedom and expression.

In lessons, students learn to take responsibility in their learning and hold themselves accountable by setting attainable goals, learning how to manage their practice time efficiently, and regularly assessing their playing and practicing habits constructively.

My ultimate goal is for each student to eventually develop self-sufficiency, empowering them to teach themselves and others. To achieve this, I prioritize teaching critical listening skills, self-evaluation, effective practice techniques, and problem-solving strategies. These are skills which will not only benefit students in their cello playing, but also in their personal and professional lives.

Fundamentally, I believe that music is an powerful means for personal expression. Through music, students learn to express their emotions and develop their own artistic voice through their playing. There is so much joy to be found in music, and the pursuit of musical excellence is challenging but so rewarding.
